Lower School
Welcome to the Lower School!
An integrated approach to individual growth.
In the Lower School (grades 1-4), our focus is on the whole child. Each is treated as an individual and is a valued member of our close-knit community. Our faculty and administration get to know every student as both a person and a learner.

What's Happening in the Lower School?
Fourth graders learned about the September 11 attacks and its significance to New York City and everyone alive at the time. The fourth graders spoke about the fact that any adult who was alive on September 11, 2001 could tell you where they were that day, similar to how they can recount where they were or what they did on days where they heard big news. They then...
First graders began the year reading the book Have You Filled a Bucket Today? This is a book about kindness, which shares ways that each person can "fill someone's bucket" and lift them up throughout daily life. This relates to their first unit in Ramaz's Character Strong curriculum, in which students have their "Kindness Kickoff." First graders had a discussion about how they can fill someone's bucket in the classroom, at home, and in their community. They completed a drawing and writing...
The Lower School is jumping into the new school year with Art Room musical chairs and a monochromatic self-portrait collaborative mural! First graders will each be assigned a color, which they will use to complete a self-portrait in any style they wish. These portraits will be collected over the next few weeks and displayed together on...
Lower Schoolers received a special visit from ping-pong champion Ms. Estee Ackerman. The students watched a news segment about Ms. Ackerman, which discussed her dedication to maintaining her Jewish observance while engaging in her sport, even missing championship games if they fall on Shabbat. The Olympic athlete then presented her own...
Students had the incredible experience of a private Zoom call with Israeli ambassador Ms. Belaynesh Zevadia. Ms. Zevadia was the first Israeli woman of Ethiopian origin to serve as an Israeli ambassador. She even had the honor of lighting torches at the Torch-lighting Ceremony during Israel's 66th Independence Day celebrations in 2014. This session was part of the students' learning unit "מבצע משה" (Mitzvah Moshe), focusing on the Ethiopian Jews who...
In a fascinating culmination of their unit on community workers, each first grade class threw a party with their parents to celebrate all they've learned. Each student specialized in a particular community worker: firefighter, bus driver, dentist, police officer, doctor/nurse, or veterinarian. They each wore "hard hats" decorated with symbols to represent their respective community worker, and incorporated many multimedia...
Ramaz choir students in third, fourth, and fifth grade had an unforgettable experience when they participated in the American Young Voices concert at the Prudential Center. The AYV, a music education organization, produces the largest children's choir concerts in the world. At this concert, Ramaz sang music of varying styles...
On November 29, 1947, a 2,000-year-old dream became a reality: the State of Israel was reborn in its ancient homeland. This historic moment was made possible by the UN General Assembly's adoption of Resolution 181. As part of the second grade's unit on the history of the Land of Israel, and especially in light of current events, the students were excited to reenact this momentous day themselves. They set up...
The second graders have just begun a new unit on "fractured fairytales!" During this unit, they delve into classic fairytales and their counterparts—fractured fairytales. Students explore how these retellings twist the traditional tales by changing the hero, villain, setting...
