Upper Schoolers Tour Art at Two of the Best Museums in the World

Ramaz News

The city truly is Ramaz's classroom! Students regularly enhance their learning by touring iconic cultural and educational sites, often right in Ramaz's backyard. The Art History class took an amazing trip to the iconic Guggenheim Museum, a hub of Impressionist, Modern, and contemporary art. There, the students paid special attention to the art of Rashid Johnson, examining the messages he infused into his works and the techniques he utilized. For example, they analyzed his abstract piece "The Shuttle," which uses books, a radio, mirror glass, and plant-based materials to contemplate the interaction between science, earth, and humanity. But that wasn't the only art museum trip! The senior elective course, Cultural NYC, took a Highlight tour of the Met Museum of Art. The tour was incredible, including examining an African power figure, a Buddhist Maitreya, a Hudson Valley School classic – Thomas Cole’s "Oxbow," which, fun fact, features the name Noah written in Hebrew – and Jackson Pollack's "Autumn Rhythm (Number 30)." Students learned about how the various works were produced and gained tips on how to decipher their meanings. They were so grateful for the opportunity to examine these amazing works, not merely in a textbook but up close in person!
