Ramaz Honors Congressman Ritchie Torres with the Semper Fi Award for Supporting Jews and Israel

Ramaz News

Ramaz was blessed to welcome Congressman Ritchie Torres to the Upper School, where Ramaz honored him with the Julius L. Lassner Semper Fi Award for Good Citizenship and Service to God and Country. This significant award recognizes exceptional contributions to the country and the ethical foundation of Judaism. Ramaz presented Rep. Torres with the award to thank him for his support, solidarity, principles, and true empathy for the Jewish people. His strong allyship has been particularly special at this time, when his peers and his constituents place immense pressure to conform to antisemitic and anti-Zionist norms.

The event was even attended by a former Knesset member, the Honorable Shirly Pinto, and a sign language interpreter stood onstage to interpret for the activist, who is deaf. Charles G. '25 introduced speaker Mr. Jamie Lassner '82, who shared remarks about the values of his father, CIA agent Julius L. Lassner z"l, and provided context for this important award.

Ashley R. '25 introduced Rep. Torres, describing his staunch advocacy for Israel and Ramaz's deep appreciation for his work. Mr. Jonathan Cannon presented the award and Rep. Torres addressed the assembly with a profound speech of his own. He expressed his honor to receive the award and passionately described his love and support for the Jewish people. He reminded the audience of the historic connection between the Jewish and African American communities, including the powerful support by Jews during the Civil Rights movement. He loves Israel and firmly defends it, engaging with anti-Zionists and working to change their minds and combat their agendas. Rep. Torres accepted hard-hitting questions from students about his beliefs and policies, and offered detailed answers about his leadership goals and his strategies to stand up against antisemites and anti-Zionists.
