Bookstore Books-Tour: Students Explore 18 Miles of Books at the Strand

Ramaz News

As part of the ongoing initiative hasifriyah metayelet (“the library takes a trip”), and in honor of “Banned Books Week” (September 22-28), Upper School Librarian Dr. Daniel Stein Kokin led a group of students to visit the venerable Strand Bookstore near Union Square. Founded in 1927, the Strand’s chief claim to fame is its 18 miles of books—thanks to which, participating students were offered $18 in credit toward the purchase of a book of their choice. Lechaim ulesefarim! (“To life and letters!”) This week’s visit to the Strand was also the first installment of what Dr. Stein Kokin has named “The Tugendhaft Bookstore Tour.” The tour, which will periodically bring students to browse in different great bookstores across New York City, revisits a tradition established by former Upper School history teacher Dr. Aaron Tugendhaft ‘94, after whom the tour is named. All participants had a great time and each came away the proud owner of a new book!
