Yad Vashem Representatives Visit To Help MS Mark International Holocaust Remembrance Day

Ramaz News

To mark International Holocaust Remembrance Day this week, the eighth grade heard from Ramaz parent and grandparent Dr. Marlene Yahalom, Director of Education, American Society for Yad Vashem, about the lives of children during the Holocaust. Entitled "No Child's Play," the exhibit describes how children coped in ghettos, in hiding, and in camps, despite their terrible surroundings. She also introduced the students to Dr. Janusz Korczak, a pediatrician and educator who headed a children's orphanage in the Warsaw Ghetto.  The students were astounded when they learned that Dr. Korczak, despite being offered the opportunity to save himself, refused to leave "his children" and instead perished with them in the Treblinka Death Camp. On their visit to Yad Vashem later this year, they will look at the memorial to him and the children of the ghetto in a new light.
