Fifth Graders Learn About Leadership Qualities Through Navi, Hebrew, History, and the Middle School Community

As part of their study of Sefer Shoftim, fifth graders explored leadership as a central theme woven throughout the stories of Ehud, Shamgar, Devorah, Barak, Yael, and Shimshon. Through close textual analysis, class discussions, and collaborative learning, the students examined how Hashem works through many different individuals to guide and assist Bnei Yisrael, and how effective leaders can possess a wide variety of strengths, talents, and approaches.

They expanded on these ideas for their Leadership Exploration Project, where they investigated what it means to be a leader, how leaders emerge, why people choose to follow them, and the many forms leadership can take. Drawing from leaders they encountered in Navi, Hebrew, and History classes, students conducted research, interviewed teachers, classmates, family members, and one another, and reflected on the leadership qualities they admire most. They explored examples of historical, contemporary, Jewish, and personal leaders while considering the characteristics that make leadership effective in different contexts.

Students then created presentations using a variety of media platforms to share their findings, insights, and personal reflections. By connecting their learning to the leaders they studied in Sefer Shoftim, students developed a deeper appreciation for leadership, responsibility, courage, and the ways in which each person can positively influence others and contribute to their community.
