Our second grade classes welcomed their parents for a very special tour of their MiddotMark Museum Gallery. Students were divided into groups and worked extensively on their projects, in which they used the Design Thinking process to discuss New York City's values and their communal and personal middot to create a prototype of a building that would encompass and represent their values. Each group collaborated in designing models of their buildings where these middot can be seen or practiced, e.g. an elevator in which you give honest compliments, or a "Find a Friend" booth. After creating the physical structure using recycled materials, all students learned how to digitally build spaces from their buildings through the app, Tinkercad. In addition, the students represented their lengthy process through a process board, and they concluded with a writing component as they wrote to the Landmarks Preservation Commission to ask these buildings to become landmarks. All of these elements were proudly on display for parents at the gallery tour, and the students utilized their new public speaking skills as they walked their guests through the details of the project.

This project exemplifies the Ramaz LS educational philosophy, blending so many educational and meaningful components seamlessly. Our students collaborated in groups, honed their persuasive writing skills, identified different Jewish values and middot, and explored practical ways to exercise these middot. They also dove deep into our design thinking program, which emphasizes lessons of empathy and building understanding through the means of STEAM education and creating designs with practical and meaningful applications.
