Third Graders Travel Across the Sea in Their Historical Fiction Unit

Ramaz News

Third graders are immersing themselves in historical fiction! Students read the books The Memory Coat and When Jessie Came Across the Sea to start the unit. Students were introduced to the idea of immigrating to the United States and discussed the process of traveling across the Atlantic. They learned about the history of Ellis Island as an immigration center and its current use as a historical monument and museum. The students are already drawing connections to their own lives, from their families' immigration stories to how Ellis Island is just a subway ride away from Ramaz! They are so excited to continue reading historical fiction and link it to their social studies curriculum this fall.
