Pre-K Keshet Found Their Mittens

Ramaz News

Pre-K Keshet read two versions of the well-known Ukrainian folktale The Mitten that has been retold and illustrated by several children's authors and illustrators. The class read the two versions retold by Jan Brett and Jim Ayelsworth. The story is about a little boy who loses his mitten in the snow and the many winter animals that find their way into the mitten to seek shelter. After reading each version of the story, the children sequenced pictures from the story by putting pictures in order to retell the story.  Sequencing activities help children recognize patterns, put a series of events in a logical order, understand positional words like first, next, and last, and learn the elements of a story such as beginning, middle, and end. The children then compared the two versions of the stories and made a Venn diagram to discuss the similarities and differences in the stories and characters in each version of the book. Finally, the children each sewed their own mini-mittens!
