As a culmination to their immigration study, the third grade students visited the Tenement Museum on the Lower East side. The students traveled back in time as they explored tenements from the 1800's and 1900's. They learned about the families that lived there and explored the different living conditions and objects they had in their homes during those times. Students were able to demonstrate their knowledge through their thoughtful questions and responses during the tour. As part of this study, the third graders read historical fiction and non-fiction texts related to immigration and Ellis Island. In addition, each student interviewed someone who immigrated to this country. The third graders wrote 2-paragraph essays about these experiences which are on display on the 8th floor.
