Second Grade Students Build Model Race Cars To Learn About Newton's Laws of Motion
Posted 01/15/2019 01:32PM

In science, second graders have been working diligently on building model race cars in order to experience Newton's Laws of Motion. During the process, the students surpassed several design challenges. They had to keep the wheels (recycled bottle caps) on the cars, using clay and wooden sticks. This proved to be the source of many revisions and test trials as the children worked in teams. A balloon would propel the cars forward. Working together to attach the balloon with straws, as well as to agree on the best angle of the straws to propel the car forward, proved to be more challenging than the children had originally predicted. For this activity, the students succeeded at designing, creating, and revising- all parts of the design process - their race car prototypes.
