GRADE TWO JUDAIC STUDIES
Overview
Second grade students begin the year with a review of their Hebrew reading and writing skills to give them the confidence that they need to continue in their studies. Students begin their formal, introductory-level study of
Chumash, and receive formal instruction. They undertake creative projects as they further their understanding and observance of
Shabbat and
chagim. They study and perform acts of
chesed as part of their growing awareness of the importance of
derekh eretz.
Safah -- Language Arts
Second grade Hebrew language builds upon the first grade curriculum, and takes the students a level further. Students learn Hebrew throughout the Judaic studies curriculum. Linguistic elements are derived directly from the curriculum, and grammar is taught within the context of the material being studied. Based on their ability, students are divided into varying skill and challenge levels. Students learn to listen and comprehend stories and short poems read by their teacher, ask and answer questions in full sentences, read and understand the stories and questions from the textbook, and master the Hebrew cursive alphabet. The
Tal-Am Level 2 curriculum is used to reinforce these goals.

Chumash -- Bible

Students develop a love for the study of Bible as they begin their study of
chumash with
Parashat Noach, the story of Noah's Ark. Using the introductory text of
Chaver la-Torah, students learn Biblical Hebrew reading skills and build their Biblical Hebrew vocabulary. Students continue with the story of Abraham in
Parashat Lekh-Lekha, aided by the
Reshef workbook, and learn how to study text through reading and writing assignments. The
Chumash Celebration takes place in December, when the students receive their
chumashim after a Hebrew play simulating the giving of the Torah at Sinai.
Dinim U'Minhagim - Laws and Customs
Students focus on many of the
chagim that take place during the school year, from
Rosh ha-Shanah through
Shavuot, combining both creative projects and formal classroom instruction. At weekly Friday "
Shabbat Parties," students learn the Hebrew terms for various rituals and
Shabbat table items. These lessons are reviewed by means of an accompanying phrase and picture booklet. Students review the
berakhot on various foods, and learn the
berakhah of
borei nefashot as well.
