This past Tuesday, November 28, the entire senior grade enjoyed the incredible opportunity to help commemorate the anniversary of the passing of Resolution 181 by the United Nations seventy years ago. The commemoration of the 1947 partition plan vote was held at the Queens Museum, the building that served as the UN headquarters from 1946 to 1950. The meeting hall had been remodeled to appear in its original state, and representatives of the member nations sat in the same seats as their predecessors did seventy years ago.
Students heard addresses from Israeli Transportation Minister Israel Katz, Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon, and president of the World Jewish Congress, Ron Lauder. Most prominent among the speakers was Vice President Mike Pence who poignantly declared: "In this room they called for the creation of the Jewish State of Israel. I am deeply humbled to join you today to commemorate this vote and to celebrate the courage, the perseverance, and faith of the Jewish people that made it possible."
The most moving segment of the commemoration was when a film of the original vote was shown in the hall. As the video of the roll call played, students in the audience counted aloud with anticipation and then cheered when the vote concluded and the resolution to establish a Jewish homeland in Israel was passed.
